The canal
boat 2+2 was originally designed for the Concept Boat Competition in
2004. The theme was for a recreational or commercial craft up to 24m
in length with an environmentally friendly focus.
This
canal boat concept takes responsibility for the cost to the environment during
construction and eventual deconstruction, something that is
missing in many manufacturing processes. Solar panels, electric motors
and environmentally sound construction are just some of the systems
suggested, none of which are believed to be science fiction. This
concept was designed to see what could be built in the twenty
first centrury as an example of the marine industries willingness
to protect and maintain its most vital asset, water.
Short listed from 72 proposals from all over the world, the canal
boat 2+2 concept was on display at the South Hampton Boat Show 2004
and received a high commendation at the Schroders London International
Boat Show 2005.
Since
this time, the design features of the canal boat 2+2 plus the technology
used in its design have been recognised within industry through articles
published (Download
pdf) and design awards through the Design Insitute of Australia
(DIA).
